The deep ultraviolet Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) is realized by Yu Ye based on two-dimensional (2-D) grating with nano-slot. By analyzing the key factors for generating SPR in deep ultraviolet, the 2-D grating with nano-slot is proposed and realized experimentally for generating deep ultraviolet SPR. Free electron beam with diameter of ~10nm is precisely controlled to fly through the nano-slot with width of ~30nm. The shortest wavelength measured was ~237nm at SPR radiation angle of 180°. It is the first time that the wavelength of SPR is shortened under 300nm. And a tuning range over several hundred nanometers is achieved by changing the electron energy.
